Best Local Tips

Local Tips for Enjoying Dubrovnik Like a Pro🤫

  1. Avoid eating on Stradun (the main street)
Restaurants on Stradun are often more expensive, just like in any tourist city, you’re partly paying for the location and the experience, not just the coffee or meal itself. Businesses in that area pay high rents for the prime location, so their prices reflect that to keep their business alive. If you head into the side streets, you’ll usually find prices that are sometimes half as cheap.
  2. Walk the City Walls early
Go in the morning to beat the crowds and catch the best light for photos.
  3. Take a day trip to Lokrum Island
Just a short boat ride from the Old Town, Lokrum is one of the best places in Dubrovnik to relax and unwind.
  4. Try local wines
Ask for Dingač (a strong red) or Pošip (a crisp white). Both are top-quality local wines.
  5. Skip the cable car and hike up Srđ Hill
The views are exactly the same, and the hike is free. It’s a great way to enjoy nature and get a workout too.
  6. Choose a private boat tour
You’ll have more flexibility, avoid the crowds, and get to visit hidden spots the big group tours miss.

  7. Eat at Konoba Pjatanca for authentic local food
Just by Ploče Gate, they are the only restaurant in the Old Town area that prepares peka—the best local dish—in the traditional way, on an open fire. It’s a must-try, but be sure to preorder at least 3 hours ahead as it takes time to prepare.

  8. Banje Beach is the most famous, but often crowded
For a better experience, head a little further to Sveti Jakov Beach—it’s quieter, more local, and in my opinion, much nicer.
  9. Explore the side streets
Some of Dubrovnik’s best-kept secrets are hidden away—little cafes, charming views, and fewer people.
  10. Use Uber carefully
Due to new traffic regulations, not all Ubers are allowed to enter the Old Town area. Make sure your ride is a licensed transfer or registered taxi with the proper permissions to avoid any issues.

  11. Buy the Dubrovnik Pass
For the same price as a City Walls ticket, the Dubrovnik Pass also gives you entry to several museums and other attractions. It’s a great deal and saves you money if you’re planning to explore more than just the walls.

  14. Be careful with cash machines (ATMs)
Avoid using the yellow or blue ATMs that just say “ATM”—these are often from private European companies, not banks, and can have very high fees and bad exchange rates. Always use an ATM at a bank. There’s an OTP bank branch inside the Old Town you can trust.
